Congressman Matt Salmon, a conservative Republican serving Arizona’s 5th Congressional District, said in a statement on Friday that Speaker of the House John Boehner’s resignation was for Washington leaders a “wake-up call to stop ignoring the will of the people” and a “gut-check for everyone in Washington.”
“Either we finally rise up to the occasion and stop caving to the Obama administration’s every demand, or we remember the powers of the legislative branch that were designed by our Founding Fathers to prevent the executive branch from becoming a dictatorship,” Rep. Salmon said.
Party of that “gut-check” Congressman Salmon may have been referring to was for the next shoe to drop in failed squishy establishment RINO leadership — that feckless Surrender Caucus leader, Obama’s Mitch McConnell, should also resign.
According to a report from National Review, soon after Boehner’s stunning announcement, Rep. Salmon texted Senator Mike Lee who, like Salmon and unlike both Boehner and McConnell, is a strong proponent of constitutionally limited government, saying that the “next guy in the crosshairs will probably be McConnell.”
On Friday, Matt Salmon applauded Boehner’s resignation as a “stand up thing,” telling FOX News’s Julie Banderas that Boehner realized he was getting in the way of Congress doing their job, keeping their promises, and standing up to Obama:
“He realized that he was becoming the focus of all of the attention and he was the issue, instead of the issue at hand, which is to get back to the Constitution — to do the job we promised the American people we’d do — and get on with doing what we have to do to fight Barack Obama. And I think that what John Boehner did was a very stand up thing and I praise him for it.”
Salmon confirmed to Banderas that he was one of the many set to vote against Boehner continuing as speaker before the resignation announcement, then went on to say that Congress is dealing with a lawless president who has no respect for the rule of law or the U.S. Constitution.
“I think that we have a very limited amount of options in dealing with a president that really has no value for the Constitution, no value for the rule of law, no value in working with the Congress.
Really, the only opportunity we have to try to change the way he thinks is through the power of the purse — that’s all we’ve got. We tried to do that last November, when he [Obama] did his unconstitutional amnesty of 5 million people. We tried to do it with the defunding of Obamacare — when the president went forward and changed Obamacare many, many times with his ‘pen and his phone,’ unconstitutionally so.
And I believe the American people expect us — they don’t always expect us to win, but they do expect us to fight on principle and they expect us to do our job. And they expect us to do what we promised we would do.”
This wasn’t the only time that Representative Matt Salmon has been critical of McConnell. In March, Salmon told Newsmax TV that McConnell “lacks a backbone,” a charge that many conservatives would see as an understatement.
Keeping campaign promises is something neither squishy leaders Boehner and McConnell, establishment stooges who long ago waged war against the pro-freedom, pro-Constitution Tea Party movement, have worried about fulfilling, which could be why a whopping 72% of Republican primary voters are dissatisfied with both of the unprincipled “leaders.”
In July, Texas senator and presidential candidate Ted Cruz took to the Senate floor, calling out McConnell as having repeatedly “lied” to him, other Senators, and the press, in order to advance the leftist Obama Regime agenda, a charge that McConnell and his lackeys have been unable to refute.
